Smelting Furnace RestorationRestoration began on the furnace in the summer of 1999. UW-Platteville History Major, Alan VanNatta, began the project by clearing away brush and debris with the aide of equipment from his family's farm. During that time John Broihahn, from the State Historical Society's Archeology department was contacted about the project. Since then John has been actively involved in the project in a myriad of facets such as archeological digs to aiding in the masonry work.
In the spring of 2000, with the aide of the Potosi Township, we were able to excavate the large "landslide" of rock and debris that was encompassing much of the site. An estimated 100 cubic yards of material was removed. Archeological digs were investigated in the late summer and fall.
In November of 2001, thanks in part to a Point of Beginnings Heritage Area 2001 Interpretation and Preservation Grant, critical repairs were made to the arch. Work continued throughout 2002 and will resume again in the spring of 2003. Later preservation stages will involve aesthetic repairs, continued archeological investigations, and the development of educational materials and signage. The project will be ongoing and will be in need of continued funding supplied by grants and donations. Anyone willing to donate materials, time and or money towards the project are encouraged to do so. |
