Rockville
First settled by A. W. Emery and Samuel Druen in 1832, this became a
lively mining town to prospectors of the Phillips Range and Red Dog Diggings
which lie nearby. The post office from Pin Hook (name used in the earliest
maps) was situated here. A dance hall stood adjacent to White's Tavern
(once operated by Fred Tanner in the hollow). The dances attracted as
many as 1,000 paid admissions during the Swing Era and ran from 1938 to
1976.
In 1862 a two-story school was built and used until 1954 when a new
a one-story steel building replaced the previous. The school soon-after
closed and the children were bused to Potosi. Today the building houses
an apiary.
