Corn crib & old garage/sheep
barn. 1998
|
The building referred to as the corn crib was built in the 1920s.
Hogs were raised in an addition below the crib where corn could
easily be pitched to the hogs during feedings. The lot was covered
with lean roof and had an open front. A farrowing building was added
to this covered lot during the 1930s. During the 1960s the hog lot
and farrowing area was remodeled. Structural instability can be
seen today in the foundation and cement floors of this remodeled
area. This addition was made during the Vietnam era and steel was
in short supply. Very little steel was used to reinforce the walls
and cement.
In the 1970s the corn crib was converted into a farrowing building.
Having built a shell corn bin several years earlier, the building
was no longer used for storing corn. After selling off all of the
hogs the corn crib, covered hog lot and old farrowing areas have
been used to store large round hay bales. Plans are to remodel the
corn crib area to store and display antique farming equipment and
tools.

A woodshed was built in the 1920s west of the home. Neighbors and
friends would get together and have what was called a Cutting
Bee. They would just cut wood all day to get their supply
for winter. They would drag whole cut trees with tractors and have
a large tractor mounted saw cut the logs, then men split the wood
with mauls while the other family members stacked it.The wood shed
later became used as a garage and repair shop until it was moved
to another area of the farm in 1980 to be used for storage. To the
east of the woodshed was a round sloped roof building that was used
for a garage. It was razed to make way for the new garage. A steel
covered pole-shed building was built in 1980 and has a partial cement
floor and serves as a shop and garage.
Below the windmill stood a poultry house. This was used until the
late 1980s. Above that stood a building over the cistern where the
milk was stored in cans to cool.
In the 1960s a 30' x 40' steel machine shed was built west of the
1910 shed and in the early 1990s additions were built onto both
sheds. To house young cattle a steel pole-shed was built in 1982.
This building is located Northwest of the dairy barn
Before the new home was built in 1904 residents of
the farm lived in a 2 story log home. After the log home was abandoned
as living quarters the lean portion housed a steam engine. The lean
later burnt after the engine caught it aflame. The windmill that
pumped the water for the log cabin was moved to a location near
the new house. This log home was located east of where the present
home sits.
The area within the present yard where an apple orchard grows,
once stood a Hops House. This was used to store the
hops that were grown on the hillside behind the house. This possibly
may have been built in the 1880s as the abstract states that the
farm was leased for 4 years for the purpose of growing hops. The
hops were sold to the Potosi Brewery and possibly to the British
Hollow Brewery.
